Plant Care
Consistent plant care encourages growth.
The key to luscious crops and big yields is good harvesting technique and zero dry-outs.
Cut in places that encourage regrowth
Remove discolored or unhealthy leaves
Keep shelf lids, lights, fans, and vents clear
Keep the water tank filled
Step 1 -
Cut to
encourage regrowth
The goal of plant care should always be to encourage ventilation, air flow, and overall health of the plant material in your shelves. Remove dead, dying, burnt, or discolored plant material as soon as you see it.
Don’t forget to clear fallen leaves and any debris on the trays! Lower leaves will fall off as the plant grows, clear them away as soon as they fall.
Step 2 -
Remove unhealthy leaves
For most plants, larger leaves should be harvested for use in your meals as each plant grows to give it space. Harvest plants to keep the lights, vents, trays, and fans clear.
Never harvest more than 2/3 of the existing plant material. Generally, plants need to retain some leaves to continue photosynthesis.
Without sufficient ventilation and removal of excess material - mold, algae, and other unwanted nasties become more likely.
Step 3 -
Thin plants to create space
Even with proper harvesting and pruning, dry outs are the biggest threat to your crop’s health. Identify two times in the week to top off your water tank.
We recommend connecting your Farmshelf to your home’s plumbing to make filling a breeze. If you choose not to do so, that’s okay! Your unit comes with a water cart and fill hose for manual filling, too.
